Start the day off right!
As springtime quickly approaches, we're all thinking about getting in to shape, maybe renewing the New Year's resolutions, and bathing suit weather. Before you sign up at the gym or start the latest "diet", remember the basics: start your day with a good breakfast. One of the very best things you can do for your body is to start the day off right with a simple, wholesome breakfast. A simple cereal that is high in fiber and whole grains, low in sugar and transfats, combined with non-fat milk (or rice milk if you're lactose intolerant), a glass of juice (I usually water my juice down quite a bit), and maybe a little fruit either on the side, or with your cereal.
Too many of us are in a rush out the door, skip breakfast, or stop at the coffee shop and grab a muffin or scone, which are typically pretty high in calories, high in refined sugars, and high in transfats. Pro athletes and fitness experts know that we need calories at our peak work hours, or when we're most productive. For most of us, that's in the morning. You might remember your mother telling you that your oatmeal would "stick to your ribs." She may not have known it, but she was referring to the relatively low glycemic index (slow burn or metabolization time) of things like oatmeal and cereal. This is important for breakfast, especially in order to get you through your best productivity hours. Add the fruit and juice for medium glycemic index foods, and you have the perfect breakfast. Of course, there are many other good choices, but this is a simple and fast choice, and let's face it, when you're in a hurry, simple and fast counts. One of my favorites is Kashi brand Heart to Heart cereal, a glass of watered-down orange juice, and half of a banana. Fast, nutritious and good!
My best wishes to you all, have a great day, and good luck with your spring training!
Jon
